Cook Island Honeymoon - An Ideal Honeymoon Location

The Cook Islands are often referred to as the ‘Jewel of the Pacific’ because of the eclectic mix of Polynesian and Kiwi culture, which offers a very cosmopolitan South Seas society in a truly magical Pacific Island setting.   The Cook Islands was administered by New Zealand until the late 1960s, so it is very ‘kiwised’, with English being the spoken language, and many Cook Islanders spending extended time, or many now living in New Zealand or Australia. The Cook Islands, particularly Rarotonga and Aitutaki, are also becoming known as the Romantic Isles, with weddings numbers generally doubling each year in recent times. Geographically close to Tahiti, but far distant in pricing!

With the New Zealand dollar as its currency, a Cook Island honeymoon is an attractive honeymoon destination for New Zealanders with no money being lost in exchange rates.   For Australian honeymooners coming to the Cook Islands,  it becomes very appealing financially with the strong AUD and can often be less expensive, and far more romantic, to honeymoon in the Cook Islands than somewhere closer to home. For American and European couples the currency exchange will always offer a pleasing ‘bang for your buck’ honeymoon destination.

The Cook Islands are an easy honeymoon destination to get to for New Zealanders and Australians, with a 3.5 hour flight time from Auckland, or a 6.5 hour flight time on the direct Air New Zealand flight from Sydney.  Air New Zealand, Virgin Australia, Qantas and Jetstar also connect from Australia through Auckland. There is a weekly direct night flight from Los Angeles to Rarotonga that services the northern hemisphere honeymooners.

With a Cook Island honeymoon you will experience that ‘untouched world’.  In the middle of the South Pacific, far from the maddening crowd, you will experience the South Seas romance that many can only dream about for their honeymoon. It is where you can be self indulgent and intimate in your very own slice of paradise with golden beaches, cooling palms, and magnificent coral reef and lagoon. You enter a world of Cook Island Time, where watches, phones and diaries become superfluous.

There is honeymoon accommodation to fit all budgets and requirements, from backpacker hostels through to five star resorts, including a growing number of  boutique self catering properties like Sea Change Villas. The beauty of Rarotonga is that the whole island becomes your honeymoon playground as unlike some other Pacific Island destinations, you won’t be confined to your resort. Scooters and cars are cheap to hire, allowing you to very easily become a citizen of the island, enjoying a fun and romantic Cook Island honeymoon.

There are more than 50 cafes and restaurants scattered around Rarotonga’s 32km coastline, many nestled right on the beach to let you enjoy that stunning sunset cocktail to toast the end of another glorious day in paradise. The cuisine is superb and well priced, being no more expensive than dining out back home, but with the added advantages of daily fresh game fish, delightful evening temperatures, and magical settings. All culinary tastes are catered for, from curry to carnivore, and with vegetarian and gluten free options available on most menus.

There is a diverse range of activities to enjoy during your Cook Island honeymoon – the beauty of Rarotonga is that you can do as little or as much as takes your fancy. On the fabulous lagoon you can take a cruise, wind and kite surf, try paddle boarding, go diving around the reef, fish for marlin or tuna, kayak, snorkel and swim with the aquarium of lagoon fish, or simply laze on the sandy beach, or perhaps doze together in a hammock strung between tropical palms.  Hop on your scooter or bicycle and go for a sightsee and coffee, explore the mountain walking tracks that offer stunning ocean views, visit the  shopping options in the main town of Avarua, take an island four wheel drive adventure tour, enjoy an evening cultural show and feast, and go looking for souvenir Cook Island pearls at the Saturday morning market.

This piece of honeymoon paradise in the South Pacific, is unique and alluring, and offers all the ingredients for that intimate, romantic and rejuvenating honeymoon. Memories are made here – you simply won’t want to leave!
