Island Nights on Rarotonga
A very special highlight and ‘must do’ of your stay on Rarotonga will be to experience an Island night blending together a traditional Cook Island feast with traditional Cook Island dancing.
The feast, known as the umakai involves baking food in an umu (underground oven), a deep pit filling with red hot stones. Chicken, pork, fish, vegetables are placed in the umu, covered with banana leaves and earth and left to steam to keep in all the natural juices of the food (kai).
After eating the feast, guests will be entertained by a dance group – dancing, singing and drumming of traditional Cook Island song and dance.
Highland Paradise Sunset Cultural Show and Feast
Wednesday and Friday Nights – highly recommended
Join your Vaka (coach) at approximately 5.15pm where your host aboard will set the scene and help select a Rangatira (chief) for the night , to participate in matters of protocol and the challenge on arrival at the centre. Arriving at Highland Paradise, you will view the lifting of the “Tapu” (a sacred ceremony) from the marae (sacred land) on which the centre stands , before enjoying a complimentary sunset cocktail and the spectacular views of the ocean and valleys below.
Then enjoy the umakai feast which has been prepared for you using succulent local meats, seafood and local vegetables before sitting back to relax and enjoy the vibrancy and energy of the authentic Highland Paradise Show which includes spectacular dancers, singers and drummers , all of whom will enthral and excite. At the conclusion of the show, there are ample opportunities for photos with the dancers before being returned to the comfort of your private Rarotonga villa.
